Why you should consider attending Owen Anderson's 2014 Running Camp ...........
This is a opportunity to be coached by a renowned world-class coach and running-science authority. You will learn the skills and the knowledge to become the best runner you can be. And, you will have a pleasant experience in the West Virginia mountains. The cost is about what most runners spend per year on shoes, running clothes, race entry fees and travel to races. Yet....... the benefits will last a running lifetime.
Self-coached? Most amateur and recreational runners are self-coached. Though it has a fundamental problem - one needs sufficient prerequisite knowledge to make informed decisions. There is an enormous number of training programs and books from which to choose, how does one select the best for them? Also, there are two types of training programs; the traditional programs and the modern programs that are based on running science. Most runners begin their training following anecdotal advice or doing what they have read in typical training books. There is a solution, attend Owen Anderson's Training Camp. I've attended Owen's camp 3 times and will be going again this Summer. Obviously, I found the camp profoundly educational and a very pleasant get-away in the mountains. The program is suitable for new runners as well as very experienced racers. The fundamentals are the same, regardless.
Given that Owen has recently published his latest running science book "Running Science", why should anyone attend the camp, rather than just reading the book and following the advice? And, why should anyone attend the camp if they have attended in the past? Consider added value: It combines the enjoyment of interacting with Owen and the other runners in the context of a beautiful area and the fact that hands-on teaching is more effective than reading about how to do something.
This is a great opportunity for teens who aspire to become better runners, regardless of their particular sport if it involves running. See Kahlil's experience below.
The coach: Owen Anderson, PhD, has been a regular contributor to Runners World, Shape, Mens Health, Peak Performance, National Geographic Adventure, and Sports Injury Bulletin. He has written extensively on the topics of running training, strength training for running, sports nutrition, and injury prevention, and he developed the neural system of training, which diminishes the emphasis on mileage and promotes the use of high-quality running and the progression of running-specific strength training to achieve optimal running fitness. Owen is also the race director of the Lansing Marathon and the head coach and science adviser for oolrun [Never heard of it? Take a look] His most recent book "Running Science" is very popular on Amazon.com and has received outstanding reviews.
Anderson is the founder of Lansing Sports Management, which coaches elite athletes from Kenya and manages their international competitions. This year Owen has 26 elite Kenyan runners under contract and is managing and coaching them all. He also has a coach in Kenya (Francis Kamau) who takes care of day-to-day training issues. Among Owen's runners is Mary Wacera, the current Kenyan 5000-meter champion. On February 23 this year, Mary won the "World's Best 10K", a world-class elite race in San Juan, Puerto Rico with a time of 32:06 [a 5:10 pace] and On March 29, 2014 she won the silver medal with a time of 1:07:44 at the World Half-Marathon Championship in Copenhagen, Denmark.

What our Reston Runners have to say about the 2013 camp in Vermont, in the order of the photo
Connie My grandson and I attended Owen Anderson's July 2013 Running Camp. It was a great experience in so many ways. It was very worthwhile to take the time away from home and work to really focus on improving my running ability. My goal was to build my endurance, which I achieved. I don't run distance and I'm not a competitor, I just want to comfortably run 3-6 miles and win the occasional 5K in my age group. The well planned week was a mixture of training exercises, runs (none very long which was important to this non-marathoner) and lectures. Coach Owen's lectures are very interesting and I appreciate his science based approach. I now use his book, "Running Science", for reference. I also made new friends, which is a bonus!
Al This was my 3d camp with Owen. I'm often asked: "How do you maintain your performance level and are never injured at your age and for 32 years. It's simple, I practice Owen's and other running science based principles.
David I decided to attend Owen Anderson's running camp because his approach to training is informed by scientific research in addition to his experience as a professional coach. His guidance on running form put all the pieces together so they made sense and my form improved accordingly. His training advice was logical and well organized and he used drills to help us understand it physically as well as mentally. The cost was extremely reasonable. My only disappointment was that the camp ended so soon.
Pat The best thing about Owen Anderson's running camp is Owen. He has devoted his life to running and coaching and it shows. He is able to analyze your running stride and give guidance specific to you. He is gentle and soft spoken but for some reason you hang on every word. We had a blast at camp last summer because we were in a group together, listening to Owen and running and having fun outside. I am looking forward to listening to him again to refresh what I have learned, to hear the latest in running training, and to just see him again.
Jenny Owen's camp was a great opportunity for me to see that many currently-held running beliefs and practices are simply not true or supported accurately by research. Owen carefully explained his research-based strategies in a way in which everyone could understand. Also embedded in the camp were many opportunities to practice what we had learned, and carry out the workouts that have shown to be most beneficial. Added bonuses of camp were the beautiful setting, Owen's stories of his travels and work with elite runners, and a chance to meet new people who enjoy running as much as I do.
Jenevieve As a relatively new runner I went to the workshop eager to learn how to improve my running form and my overall performance. I was extremely pleased and satisfied with the individual attention I received from Owen. From the video taping of my running form and his analysis of my form, to his specific recommendations for improvement, which were built on those things that I was doing right. While I came back exhausted, I was blissfully exhausted and excited to use my newly acquired techniques in a race. This camp was the best investment I've ever made in my development as a runner.
Paula Owen is a wonderful coach with a great deal of knowledge. I was Owenized at the July 2013 running camp. I was a little skeptical about attending the camp given that I was injured when camp started. I am grateful that I did attend. Owens coaching style is very thorough with lecture, running-specific strength training, circuit workouts and scenic runs . Being a self-taught runner, I gained knowledge beyond my expectation and made some wonderful new friends. I highly recommend Owens camp for runners of any level of experience.
Kahlil I am a 13 year old Division I soccer player who is a fast sprinter. I went to Coach Owens running camp in July 2013. My goal was to increase my running endurance. Coach Owens lectures and exercises made sense to me. I pretty much play the entire game time and sometimes two games a day. His information on nutrition helped me too. It was also fun. At the end of the week I ran almost 4 miles with the group that runs distance a lot. I didn't stop once and this showed me that I achieved my goal.
What is the camp all about? Several folks have expressed a little apprehension about exactly what will be expected of them at the camp. Based on my experience, I found that Owen welcomes everyone, regardless of their current running capability. His goal is help everyone improve their performance, regardless of the individual's starting point.
Lecture Session
Owen Anderson's Running Camp features a full program of running-specific strength training - which makes runners stronger, faster, and more injury resistant. The camp is open to individuals of all ages and ability levels. It is nestled in the mountains of West Virginia, surrounded by trails and good back-country roads for running. vVO2max sessions are conducted on a nearby college track. Three meals, plus snacks, are served each day, and attendees stay in the Concord Retreat.
Hill Training
Owen will teach you a full progression of running-specific strength training. This program includes movements which mimic the mechanics of gait and thus specifically improve strength during the act of running, not just while squatting or while engaged with a machine in the gym. Improved strength protects you from injury and allows you to put more force on the ground with each step, making you an intrinsically faster runner.
You'll learn how to put a complete training program together, with all the proper progressions through general strength, running-specific strength, hill work, and explosive training. The system is easy to learn, and he's always available to provide advice after camp ends.
Owen shoots video of you running at various speeds, analyzes your form, and make suggestions for form corrections (if necessary). You will also learn a variety of drills and exercises that will help you develop perfect running form.
Update:
Owen plans to bring four women and two men of his elite, world-class Kenyan team members to camp with us. If you've ever wanted to meet, rap and run with world-class runners, this will be a memorable opportunity.
